What is Foam?

Foam is a more considered way to watch Twitch on mobile, with cleaner viewing, better chat, and a calmer interface. It's an open-source Twitch client for iOS and Android.

Is Foam free to use?

Yes. Foam is free and open source. You can use it logged in with your Twitch account, or logged out.

Which platforms does Foam support?

Foam is built for iOS and Android

How do I install Foam?

Foam is currently available through TestFlight. TestFlight builds are provided for testing and feedback, and may include bugs, incomplete features, or changes that aren't present in a future public release. Your use of TestFlight is also subject to Apple's TestFlight terms.

Do I need a Twitch account to use Foam?

No. You can browse and watch streams while logged out. Logging in with your Twitch account unlocks personalized features such as sending chat messages and viewing your followed channels. When you log in, Foam only requests the permissions it needs, and your access token is stored encrypted on your device.

Why does the player say a stream is intended for certain audiences?

This is a restriction on Twitch's side, not Foam's. Twitch gates some content such as mature-rated games behind a logged-in account. When you see the "intended for certain audiences" message, it means Twitch requires you to be signed in to view that stream. Once you log in to the player with your Twitch account, you'll be able to watch streams featuring mature-rated games and other gated content. Unfortunately we can't sync authentication state in the app with the stream player

Why is the mobile app always delayed vs desktop?

Unfortunately this comes down to two things on Twitch's side. The first is that the video API Twitch use to power their own desktop player is far superior to the one they provide to third-party developers. The second is that Twitch don't expose a low-latency HLS endpoint to developers, which would enable much quicker playback. As a result, mobile playback can sit a little behind desktop, and there's not much we can do about it until Twitch changes what's available.

Can I watch VODs and clips?

Yes. Alongside live streams, Foam can play Twitch VODs (past broadcasts) and clips. You can watch in portrait or rotate your device for landscape.

Does Foam support picture-in-picture (PiP)?

Picture-in-picture is on the way. The control is already visible on iOS, but it isn't fully wired up yet — we're finishing it so playback stays smooth and reliable when you leave the app. It'll be enabled once it's ready.

Can I keep listening when the app is in the background?

Yes. Audio can keep playing when your screen locks or you switch to another app, so you can keep listening to a stream in the background.

Can I watch in fullscreen or landscape?

Yes. Rotate your device to watch a stream, VOD, or clip in landscape, with the video filling the screen.

Does Foam support casting to Chromecast or AirPlay?

Casting to Chromecast or AirPlay isn't a built-in feature yet. For now, playback happens on your device.

Which emote and badge services does Foam support?

Foam integrates with 7TV, BetterTTV (BTTV), and FrankerFaceZ (FFZ) to display custom badges, emotes, and cosmetics in chat, in addition to Twitch's own emotes.

Does Foam have emote autocomplete and an emote menu?

Yes. As you type in chat, Foam suggests emotes and usernames so you can finish them quickly, and there's an emote menu for browsing and searching across 7TV, BTTV, FFZ, and Twitch emotes.

Can I customize Foam?

Yes. Foam is built with customization in mind, with extensive preferences for chat, playback, and appearance — including light and dark themes — so you can make the app feel like home.

Is Foam affiliated with Twitch?

No. Foam is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Twitch, 7TV, BetterTTV, FrankerFaceZ, Vexo, Statsig, Sentry, or Apple. It's an independent, open-source client that uses the official Twitch developer API.

Does Foam collect my personal data?

No. Foam does not collect or share any personal data. The app uses Vexo for anonymous usage analytics and Sentry for crash reporting to help us improve performance, and this website also uses Statsig analytics to understand page views and traffic. These are associated with a randomly generated identifier so we can understand usage across sessions, but beyond that none of this includes personal information. Can I turn off analytics?

Yes. You can disable analytics in the app settings if you'd prefer not to share this data.

Is Foam open source?

Yes. Foam is an open-source project. Contributions, bug reports, and feature requests are welcome.
